REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MOUNT KIDUL - The Local Government of Gunung Kidul in Yogyakarta hopes the exotic karst of Gunung Kidul can be listed in UNESCO's Geopark. Gunung Kidul literally means South mountain in Javanese, sits in a karst region.
Hence, the geography makes the area hard to be planted. The southern coastal of Gunung Kidul is rough and wild but exotic with several beautiful beaches.
"The karst needs protection. Local government will propose a concept to central government," an official from Mount Kidul Local Government, Sri Agus Wahyono, said on Sunday.
Mount Kidul has several potential locations that can be listed as Geopark. The locations are Nglanggeran Old Volcanic in Patuk and Pindul Cave in Karangmojo.
"We are not only selling the karst as tourism object, but also the agriculture and people's life," he said.
Karst Analyst from Acintyacunyata Speleological Club (ASC), Bagus Yulianto, said local government must conduct mapping and gather detailed and complete data of karst in Mount Kidul. "They should also have priority for the certain region to be listed in Geopark. People, NGO, and other related parties should also involve in the concept," he said.
