REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Ulama or Muslim cleric have potential to promote immature Islamic industry in Indonesia. Nevertheless, not many of them are familiar or have knowledge about the industry.

“Ulama role in socializing Islamic insurance is very big,” the Chairman of Economic Association of Indonesia I (IAEI), Agustianto, said in Jakarta. Yet, regulator and industry do not pay more attention to the ulama’s role in promoting Islamic industry despite the big potential.

Agus added, he had given workshop on Islamic economy for the ulema in Medan. “Now ulama will not only deliver worship, but also other subjects,” he said.

Workshop is always conducted by related institutions, such as IAEI’s cooperation with Bank Indonesian in training the ulama on Islamic economy. The ulama is expected to promote Islamic industry in every event.

A Muslim prominent figure, Dr Didin Hafidhuddin, admitted that he also share his knowledge on Islamic industry including banking and insurance, while delivering sermon. “I try to encourage people to pay more attention on Islamic industry,” Hafidhuddin said.
