REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The spring of Islamic banking on 1990s reflected the second revival of Indonesia, the Chairman of Indonesia Ulama Council (MUI), Ma’ruf Amin, said. The first revival happened 100 years before Islamic banking spring, which was when Indonesia struggled against colonialism.

The first revival was marked by the resistance, such as the Java War, Geger Cilegon, and other movements. “The proper name should have been Muslim struggle over colonialism,” Amin said on Sunday.

“It was also supported by the environment. Suddenly, the demand to favor Islamic economy as an alternative to trigger the development of national economy emerged,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of synergy between financial experts and Islamic law experts to anticipate the problem from modern economic system, as they worked hand in hand to build a new way of Islamic banking economy. Amin admitted that Islamic banking was underestimated. Most Muslim was skeptic about its success. Yet, after 20 years this banking system found its shape and community.
