REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian government would soon open honorary consular in Ramallah, Palestine, Teuku Faizasyah, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s spokesman for foreign affairs, said on Monday.

“It is not easy to appoint an ambassador there. The most realistic is honorary consulate,” he said.

Indonesia has long recognized Palestine. But the support is not in the form of physical building or official representative. So far any assistance from Indonesia provided through Indonesian embassy in Jordan.

Faizasyah admitted, the process to appoint a consular started long time ago, and approved by President of Palestine, Mahmud Abbas.

The opening of the consul is expected to increase the quality of diplomatic relationship between Indonesia and Palestine.

The spokesman of Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Michael Tene, said that the process was still undergoing and nobody had been appointed to sit as the consul.

He said the appointment of honorary consul was different with director general consulate and others, since honorary consul should be Palestine citizen. “We ask Palestine citizen who fulfill the requirements to be an honorary consul,” Tene said.
