JAKARTA – Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) industry in Pelalawan, Riau, saves the energy by using lignin from waste products processed into fuel source to run the machine and electricity in the area. “Wood lignin processed into heavy black liquor can replace the usage of fossil fuel in producing pulp and paper by 87 percent,” the Environmental Manager of RAPP, Edward Wahab, said on Sunday in a talk show on Energy Saving in Jakarta.
The using of heavy black liquor in pulp production does not only reduce the production cost, but also produce electricity for the resident of Pangkalan Kerinci and vicinity. The supply of electricity, he said, was a corporate social responsibility for people. The most important thing is that the using of this alternative energy is environmentally friendly because the energy is renewable on every production process and waste-free.
“The carbon emission produced by the factory from the using of lignin is lower than the using of fossil or coal fuel. The point is that the company tries to reduce the using of fossil energy as fuel generator,” Wahab said.
