Police arrest 53 suspects of Salemba clash

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Jakarta Police Department arrested 53 suspects involved in the clash in Salemba, Central Jakarta on Thursday. "Started from Friday, investigator has arrested 53 suspects on the clash," Jakarta Police Spokesman Rikwanto said on Friday Night.

The police decided to arrest the suspects after 24 hours investigation. Police also secured a unit of police car, a unit of motorcycle, a molotov cocktail, a catapult, and some banners and rocks.

Rikwanto said the suspects could be charged with Article 187 of Penal Code on jeopardizing human life in conjunction with Article 170 of Penal Code on damaging towards human and goods and Article 178 of Penal Code on violence towards goods.

Earlier, the members of National Consolidation of Indonesian Students (Konami), who staged a protest on the increase of fuel price, were involved in the clash with the police in Salemba on Thursday.

The protesters refused to dismiss. Instead, they damaged police car and other public facilities. They also tormented Chief Police of Senen, Imam Zebua until he suffered from broken flank and should be treated intensively in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). Ten other officers and seven protesters were also injured in the clash.
