REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The State Ministry of Environment (KLH) and Directorate General of Customs and Excise will pursue legal action against importers of hazardous and toxic waste container.
“We will pursue them,” the deputy for environmental compliance at the ministry, Sudariyono, said on Thursday, when he investigated some containers filled with waste in Customs and Excise, North Jakarta.
About 113 containers seized at a port of Jakarta are confirmed to contain hazardous and toxic waste by laboratory while other 118 containers are proved to contain hazardous and toxic based on eye analysis. The containers are listed by the Customs and Excise until January 2012.
Waste scrap metal, asphalt, and liquid waste are found inside the containers. It is against the Legislation Number 32 of 2009 on the Protection and Management of Environment and Legislation Number 18 of 2008 on Waste Management.
Sudariyanto said, the subject could be sentenced five to 15 years of prison or 15 billion IDR fine according to law. The deputy said investigators had summoned some witnesses related to the findings. The remaining 118 containers will be investigated further.
