REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GORONTALO – Muslim inmates in Indonesia will get a new program to strengthen their spiritual life while serving their sentence. Studying Quran is one of them, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Amir Syamsuddin, said after visiting Gorontalo penitentiary  on Saturday.

During the visit, Syamsuddin gets the fact that many assisted inmates in Gorontalo Penitentiary become translators and hafidz (a person who memorize Quran -Ed) after attending reading Alquran program every Thursday night. That explain that the authority still concern the inmates’ spiritual life.

Syamsuddin was more fascinate when some inmates showed their skills by translating the second chapter of Quran. “It could be a primary program and applied in other penitentiaries in Indonesia,” he said.

The program, he added, could help the inmates in improving the quality of their spiritual life and reduce the risk of violent act occurs while living behind the bars. It is expected that in longer term, their spiritual life will prevent them from reinvolving in any crimes.  “I will send the infrastructures to support this program,” Syamsuddin said.
