REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - German Ambassador in Indonesia Norbert Baas said batik was an Indonesian living heritage. He believes, batik has a good prospective and bright future in the international fashion industry. The statement made in opening of a Indonesian Batik exhibition "A Living Heritage" at the Indonesian National Gallery, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
"Batik production can be more important in the fashion industry in Germany and Indonesia," Baas said.
Germany will cooperate with Indonesia to bring Batik more globally by delivering high technology and methods in producing high quality batiks. According to data, two thousands Indonesian students are studying in Germany and they have a big influence of in batik promotion in Germany and Europe.
"Moreover, in Europe, Indonesia is recognized as a big factor in ASEAN and very promising in the future. Therefore, that is a good chance to promote Indonesia through its cultures, especially batik which is considered as a World Heritage by UNESCO," he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Managing Director of the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID) Martin Krummeck said basically EKONID had already started clean batik production which with the encouragement of Indonesian batik producers and artists in using environmental processing. The program is called Clean Batik Initiative (CBI) which is a four years project funded by the European Union and organized in Indonesia by EKONID with 2.2 million euro.
Krummeck said the next step of the CBI program which have been running for two years in Indonesia was to promote sustainable consumption of batik.
"Over the next two years, we will promote batik to the world and cooperate with the German Embassy to set up an exhibition of Indonesian batiks to share it with the world as Indonesian genuine products," he said.
The exhibition a "A Living Heritage" will last from January 25 to February 6at the Indonesia National Gallery in Jakarta and February 13-19 at Surakarta City Hall in Solo. The event will display hundreds batik collection from Pusaka Iwan Tirta Foundation, batik designer Afif Syakur, and European batik artists from German, Spain, Belgium, and Austria.
