REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Charity is one of five pillars in Islam. Two Islamic charity managements are commited to provide assistance for students who are not able to pay their tution fees. Those are Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (Baznas) and Rumah Zakat -literally translated as the house of charity. 

The former with its project "One family one scholar" provides financial assistance for university student until he or she graduates. While the later offer its help through "the Winner's School" and it targets elementary and junior high school. 

Executive Director of Baznas, Teten Kustiawan, believes that a scholar among family members will help the family in poverty eradication. In Islam he says, science and knowledge are the keys to improve the standard of living. 

Baznas offers scholarship for student who study in public university or Islamic public university since 2007. "In the end of 2011, there are 334 students join this project," Kustiawan said on Monday. 

In separate occasion, Marketing Coordinator Rumah Zakat Muhammad Trieha explains that "the Winner's school" project aims at helping children to enjoy free education. Rumah Zakat has eleven elementary schools located in some areas of Sumatra, Jakarta, West Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java, including one junior school in Bandung. "Every class has 25 students only," he said.

Rumah Zakat plans to add two more shool units and one junior school during 2012. Around 20 to 25 percent of charity managed by Rumah Zakat is allocated for the "Winner's school" project. Well, it is wonderful how charity can help people.
