Japanese Tourists are fond of Cirebon Batik

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CIREBON -- Not popular among Indonesians, Cirebon batik is more popular among international tourists. "Nearly of 80 percent of our consumers are Japanese," said Katura, a small batik entrepreneur in Cirebon, recently.

He cited, his consumers appreciate the value of batik as a piece of artwork. They understand it needs a certain degree of skill to produce batik. "They even know to distiguish my workpiece," said Katura. He was introduced to batik-making process as young as 11 years old. 

Yet, Katura production has not been able to meet his consumer demands. "Unfortunately many left empty handed due to supply lacking.
