Setya Novanto gets 15 years imprisonment

The verdict is lighter than KPK prosecutors' demand which is 16 years in jail.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Panel of judges at Jakarta Corruption Court officially sentenced Setya Novanto 15 years imprisonment and fine Rp 500 million or three months confinement. The defendant in e-ID card graft case got lighter punishment that Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors's demand which charged him with 16 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 billion or six months confinement.

"Punishment 15 years imprisonment and a fine Rp 500 billion with the provision if the fine is not paid was replaced by three months confinement," said presiding judge Yanto on Tuesday (April 24).

The judges considered all corruption elements had been fulfilled by Novanto. Panel of judges also required him to pay replacement money in accordance with the money he received in this graft case minus Rp 5 billion that he had returned it to KPK.

In addition, Novanto's right to be public servant for five years will be revoked. For the verdict, he admitted would think again to file appeal legal effort.

"I'll think again about it," said Novanto.

As the defendant in e-ID card graft case, Novanto was proven to have intervened in the budgeting and procurement of goods and services in e-ID project in 2011 until 2013. He abused his authority to benefit himself and enrich others and corporations.

The former Golkar Party chairman also was proven guilty for collecting 7,3 million US dollars and a Richard Mille watch, worth 135 thousand US dollars. The money and a watch were from Andi Narogong and PT Bimorf Lone Indonesia Director Johannes Marliem, as part of the compensation because Novanto had helped to smoothen the budgeting process.

Earlier, Novanto managed to invalid his status as e-ID card graft case suspect by winning a pretrial motion on September 29, 2017.

On October 31, 2017, KPK issued new letter ordering the start of an investigation (sprindik) for the suspect name SN that allegedly violated Article 2 paragraph (1) subsided Article 3 of Law No. 31 No. 31/1999 as amended in Law no. 20/2001 of Eradication of Corruption in Article 55 paragraph (1) book one Criminal Code.
