REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Governments of Japan and Indonesia will finalize the pre-feasibility study on the revitalization of the northern Java Railway this year.
The northern Java railway revitalization project involves the upgrading of the railway between Jakarta and Surabaya.
"The Directorate General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation, the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), and JICA have held a survey," Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Indonesia, Kawabata Tomoyuki, said after signing the loan agreement of Patimban seaport project and research facility development of Gadjah Mada University in Jakarta here on Monday.
Indonesia expected the pre-feasibility study to be completed this year. The result will be followed up by JICA, he stated.
Tomoyuki added that the result of the pre-feasibility study would be submitted to the government of Indonesia.
"Everything is still being studied," he noted.
He remarked that the speed can be increased to 160 kilometers per hour and the travel time between Jakarta and Surabaya to 5.5 hours.
The statement was based on the results of meeting between Secretary General of the Ministry of Transportation, Sugihardjo, and Deputy Minister for International Relations Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Hiroshi Narahira.
The three-day meeting produced an agreement, a synchronization between studies conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, in cooperation with the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), with a study conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The technology that will be used should consider existing tracks, travel time, reducing the crossing of the plot and widening the arch, as well as price performance.
In addition to infrastructure cooperation, the governments of Indonesia and Japan will cooperate in the software program related to the preparation of regulation and human resource development in the field of railways, especially for MRT and LRT technology.
The cooperation was also reinforced by a bilateral meeting between President Joko Widodo and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the ASEAN Summit in Manila, Philippines, on Sunday (Nov 12).
The two leaders agreed to accelerate the MRT and Patimban seaport projects as well as to strengthen other cooperation in 60 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan.
