Indonesian consulate in Houston ready to assist victims of Harvey storm

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Consulate General of Indonesia in Houston, Texas, the United States, has declared its readiness to assist Indonesian nationals who have become victims of the flood, caused by Harvey Storm, by providing shelter in the Consulate General buildings.

"The Consulate General provides a 24-hour hotline for those who need information and assistance at +1 346 932 7284," a press statement, received here by Antara, Tuesday, said.

The Harvey Storm, under the 1-4 category, have struck America's state of Texas, followed by the flood that struck the city of Houston and its surrounding area, down to the west side of Louisiana state. The storm first landed in Corpus Christi, Texas, around 330 kilometres from Houston on Friday night and lasted until early Saturday morning. The storm is estimated to continue on going until Wednesday.

The storm itself is known to be the biggest one yet to have happened in America within the last 12 years and its severity has led to President Trump declaring it as a Federal Disaster, while Governor of Texas Gregg Abbot declared his state as State of Disaster to 30 counties.

Private and public offices have closed down while schools and universities are also shut down. Both of Houston's main airports, the International George Bush airport and the William P Hobby Airport are inactive from operations for an indefinite period of time since August 27.

In response to the occurrence, the Houston Consulate General continue to carry out surveillance measures in regard to the safety of Indonesian nationals through intensive communications with leaders of public diaspora organizations and Indonesian students in Texas, as well as local authorities.

Up until now, there are no Indonesian nationals among the five recorded casualties in Houston and its surrounding areas. Most Indonesians are in safe conditions while some others have moved to higher grounds.
