REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifudin has stated that the government is not against religious ideology, but it must be in line with Pancasila state ideology.

"People are allowed to have religious concepts because it is respected, but when it contradicts or even threatens the nation's and state's principles, then the government should take action," Saifudin stated in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The minister made the remarks in connection with the government's move to revoke Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia's (HTI's) legal status on July 19, 2017.

Furthermore, Saifudin noted that it should be well understood that the government had not acted against HTI's religious teaching and propagation.

"Hence, in the context of Indonesia's religious ideas, the ideology must be in line with Pancasila because all religions understand that Pancasila emphasizes the values of religion itself," he added.

According to him, the government upholds respect for diversity in the nation and the state of Pancasila as a consensus in which Pancasila denotes essentially the values of religion that has become a common commitment.

On Wednesday, the government cancelled the legal status of HTI, an Islamic organization allegedly seeking to establish caliphate administration in the country.

Freddy Harris, the Director General of General Law Administration of the Law and Human Right Ministry, read out the announcement at the office of the Immigration Directorate General in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Harris noted that the Law and Human Right Ministry has the legal authority to validate associations or mass organizations.

Under public institution administration, mass organizations meeting the requirements and following the administrative procedure would be given a legal status (SK) as a corporate body, he explained.

On the contrary associations/mass organizations failing to meet the administrative requirements would not be given the SK, he said.

The cancellation of the SK of HTI followed the issuance of the government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) No 2 of 2017, Harris revealed

He said that the decision to revoke the SK by the government was effective from July 19, adding that the government regulates measures and sanctions against mass organizations through the Perppu No. 2 of 2017.
