REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A mega corruption scandal in the electronic identity (e-ID) card project, the trial for which is ongoing, is a big test for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), according to Suwarsono, a former adviser of KPK.

The handling of the e-ID card corruption case could turn into a positive or negative momentum, he remarked during a dialogue on revision of the Law on KPK, here, Thursday.

If the anti-graft agency is not serious in dealing with the case, it will miss its glorious era like the one in 2014, he said.

The reputation of KPK was at its lowest in 2015, he recalled. In 2016, when KPK got a new leadership, the public expectation was quite low, although it increased gradually, he noted.

There have been frequent attempts to weaken KPK, but it has managed to survive so far. In 2015, however, KPK almost failed to survive, he stated.
