Setya Novanto also asks for power project shares, Sudirman Said claims

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Sudirman Said, stated a politician who has been alleged of having used the names of the President and Vice President for his gains over PT Freeport Indonesia's contract extension, also requested for shares of power project in Timika, Papua, as compensation.

In an exclusive interview in 'Mata Najwa' program on Metro TV, Sudirman confirmed the politician was the House Speaker Setya Novanto.

"In addition to requesting the shares of power projects, he also asked Freeport to become investor and off taker (buyer) of electric power from the project," said Sudirman, after meeting with DPR's Ethics Council, in the Parliament Building, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday ( 16/11).

In detail, Sudirman explained, Setya Novanto was asking for 49 percent of the shares of hydropower plant. Then the rest 51 percent was required investment of Freeport.

"The power plant requested is not part of the 35 thousand MW project. It was just an element of conflict of interest. It is inappropriate actions by involving the private sector," he added.

Sudirman also revealed chronologically the use of names of the President and Vice President in the case of Freeport's contract extension by Setya Novanto. In his explanation, Sudirman said Setya Novanto with a businessman had been several times conducted meetings with the leadership of Freeport.

At the third meeting conducted on Monday 8th June 2015 around 02:00 pm to 04:00 pm, at a hotel in ​​Pacific Place, SCBD, Jakarta, they promised a continuation of the Freeport's contract and requested Freeport to give its shares. The shares would also be given to President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

"This information I got when I asked the leaders of Freeport to always report their interaction with key stakeholders in order to keep transparent decisions," Sudirman said.

He stated that he had evidence of a written record of the meeting. He had also visited the DPR's Ethics Council in order to reveal the case.

"As Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, I was given a mandate by the President to make improvement in energy and human resources sector," he explained.
