Ancol Dreamland organizes underwater flag hoisting ceremony

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Taman Impian Jaya Ancol recreational park in North Jakarta organized an underwater flag hoisting ceremony to observe Indonesia's 70th independence anniversary on Monday.

"We organized interesting activities to observe the country's 70th independence anniversary, including an underwater flag hoisting ceremony held at Ancol's Seaworld Indonesia," Jaya Ancol's public relations officer, Metty Yan Harahap, said on Monday.

She added that public figure Chua, from the Kotak Music Group, had acted as one of the flag hoisters at the event.

"Besides the flag hoisting activity, we also asked visitors at Ancol to sing the country's national anthem and listen to the reading of the Indonesia's Independence Proclamation's text," she said.

Harahap also pointed out that Jaya Acol Dream Land had organized these activities to remind visitors of the struggle for independence made by Indonesian freedom fighters.

In Aceh province, some 150 divers took part in an underwater flag hoisting ceremony held on the Gapang Beach, Sabang and Weh Island, on Monday, to commemorate the nation's 70th independence anniversary.

Marine Col. Ali Bahar Saragih acted as the inspector for the ceremony, while Marine Captain Ricky Sandro was the commander for the ceremony.

Indonesia's Red and White flag was hoisted 15 meters under water during the 45-minute ceremony.

After the ceremony, Col. Ali Bahar presented tokens of appreciation to the divers, who participated in the event.

In fact, underwater flag ceremonies were organized simultaneously at Sabang, the Malalayang beach in Manado, North Sulawesi, and the Tapak Kuda beach in Ambon, Maluku Province, by the Indonesian Navy's Marine Corps on Independence Day, which falls on August 17.

In North Sulawesi, the Indonesian Navy's Marine Corps held an underwater flag hoisting ceremony in Malalayang in Manado, North Sulawesi, on Monday, to mark the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence.

Some 250 divers comprising of marines, police officers, Bunaken marine park officers, and the public took part in the ceremony.

Marine Col. Herkulanus acted as the inspector of ceremony, while Lt. Col. Etwin Ramadhan was the commander of the ceremony.

"Flag hoisting, the reading of the Proclamation text, and a prayer offering were held during the ceremony," Col. Herkulanus revealed.

The underwater flag hosting ceremony was aimed at promoting the campaign to develop Indonesia as a global maritime axis, he affirmed.
