REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- A team of researchers of the Engineering Geology Faculty of the Padjadjaran University has exposed the potential of the Ciletuh Geopark in Sukabumi, West Java, to juries of the UNESCO.
"We have exposed it some time ago and the UNESCO juries have given positive response to the site which will be proposed as a global geopark," Dean of the Geology faculty Prof. Hendarmawan said here on Sunday.
According to Hendarmawan, his side made presentation regarding the Ciletuh Geopark when one of the UNESCO juries visited him recently.
"It has a big prospect to be set as a geopark, at least five juries have given positive signal," he stated.
However, it is not so easy for UNESCO to determine a natural park area as the global geopark, Hendarmawan added.
That's because there are a lot of terms and conditions that must be met, including the site should become a national level of natural park first before submission to UNESCO.
"Our target this year is to achieve a national geopark level. At least two years from now it can be brought to the international level," he pointed out.
According to him, the team of researchers submitted a report to the Vice Governor of West Java Deddy Mizwar on Friday (Jan 23) about the progress of Ciletuh Geopark.
The Ciletuh Geopark is located about 30 kilometers to the south of Pelabuhanratu, Sukabumi District.
