Medan still a transit city for illegal drugs from Malaysia

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN - Medan is still a transit city for illegal drugs, especially methamphetamine, from Malaysia. Chairman of the Antidrugs Movement (Granat) in North Sumatra, Hamdani Harahap asked police to watch at borders in Medan.

"We must prevent overseas syndicates and drug traffickers," Harahap said on Monday. Illegal drug syndicates from malaysia usually use Medan as a safe haven to store illegal drugs, then distribute the drugs to Java, Bali and other areas in the country.

Harahap added the illegal drugs, usually methamphetamine and ecstasy pills, were smuggled through Medan Polonia Airport, and also Port of Teluk Nibung, Tanjung Balai using a ferry. Last week, Team IV Narcotics Criminal Investigation Police Directorate has confiscated nine kilograms of methamphetamine from a five-star hotel and a residence in Medan on Tuesday.

The authorities has also secured 10,021 ecstasy pills, 6,785 happy five pills and 250 grams of ecstasy powder.The police officers caught the suspect with initial name KK.
