REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Saudi Arabia Government has set Eid al-Adha 2018 or 1439 in Islamic calendar on August 21. Meanwhile, Indonesia has decided the Festival of Sacrifice this year falls on August 22.

The difference has discussed by many people due to the law of fasting on Arafah day. However, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa Commission Chairman Hasanuddin AF asked Muslims to not be hesitate in fasting on Tuesday (August 21) tomorrow.

He assured that it would still be legitimate to perform Arafah fasting on Tuesday. “Don’t be hesitate to perform Arafah fasting on August 21 because here we celebrate Eid al-Adha on August 22,” said Hasanuddin.

Arafah fasting is one of the Sunnah fasts which is performed a day before Eid al-Adha or every 9 Dzulhijjah, while the fasting of tarwiyah is held every 8 Dzulhijjah. Therefore, Muslims in Indonesia can perform those castings on Monday (August 20) and Tuesday (August 21).

Hasanuddin explained, the standards used by Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are actually same, related to determination of 1 Dzulhijjah. The difference occured only because of the position of the hilal and the difference in place (mathla').

“So, there’s no problem,” Hasanuddin added.

According to Hasanuddin, if Muslims in Indonesia follow Eid al-Adha determination by Saudi Arabia Government, then they will be mistaken. He urged people to understand conditions in sharia.

“Don’t follow other ideas, which are not correct,” Hasanuddin said.

Furthermore, Hasanuddin asserted MUI Fatwa Commission is ready to issue fatwa related to the matter. However, currently the explanation related to determination of 1 Dzulhijjah is still conveyed through medias.
