One time after zuhr prayer in Nogotirto Mosque in Yogyakarta, a fellow friend of mine, Hartoyo, a retired state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina worker, told me about his son's strange dream. He dreamt of his grandmother's debt which has not been paid until she died. It is only 3 million IDR, which is actually not her debt. It is her sister's debt under her name.

Hartoyo's hand was shaken when he told me about the dream. He told me that it was horrifying that his son was screaming when he woke up. "My son has inner relationship with his dead grandmother," Hartoyo said. It is not impossible. Dream is important to freed people from negligence.

What did Hartoyo's son see in the dream? And what is the meaning? It is what I heard from Hartoyo: He saw a big basin filled with hot boiling water. Hartoyo's mother, floating inside the basin, was crying for help.

Hartoyo's son is crying and told Hartoyo about his dream. Hartoyo gave quick response. He believed that it was related with his mother's problem that she didn't tell to her children. He was right. His mother had a debt. Hartoyo called the bank to pay the loan. Not long after that, his son dreamt that his grandmother thanked Hartoyo.

We don't know the meaning of a dream, but we must contemplate Hartoyo's words. When a Muslim died, the family must ask the mourners about the possible debt. The family must immediately pay the debt for the spirit has a smooth journey to another world. We sometime have a bad habit, piling on debt and failing to pay.

Piling on debt can blunt someone's heart. It unfastens the screws of their crown. Their name will become rumor everywhere. They think that debt is not a burden. In this case, the best choice is to be conscious. Pray to God and try to pay the debt.

Allah can hear the cry from his worshiper. A door of fortune will open as long as we are willing to recover our heart sensitivity to pay our debt. Do not let our debt piling up and causing trouble to our family.

We also had debt for mortgage and my children necessity. I paid the debt off after 20 years living in rented house. I was only a los paid public servant. My family could breathe in 1990 after I taught in Universitas Kebangsaan Malaysia, under encouragement of late DR Imaduddin Abdurrahim.

Allah opened a door of fortune after I taught in Malaysia. The late Minister of Religious Affairs Munawir Sjadzali recommended me to teach in Institute of Islamic Studies in McGill University. Years after that, Akbar Tandjung asked me to be a member of Supreme Advisory Council (DPA), serving from 1998 to 2003.

I am now neither rich nor poor, but I live without debt and I have my own house. Alhamdulillah, Allah gives endless fortune. “Allahumma a’uzdubika min al-dain” (O Allah, I seek refuge from sin and heavy debt).
