REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KARAWANG -- The government plans to build a national salt warehouse in the north coast of Karawang district in West Java. The construction would be handled by the central government.

"We will only provide land," an official of the local fisheries office Abuh Bukhori said here on Tuesday.

The Karawang administration has prepared a 1,200 square meter plot of land in Krasak Village for the warehouse, and the central government has allocated Rp2.5 billion of budget for the project.

"We have prepared some 1,200 square meters of land. This will include the supporting facilities," he added.

Abuh said, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry will provide various facilities including a laboratory to measure salt concentration, weigh bridge, online CCTV connected to the ministry, and A storing warehouse to maintain the quality of salt.

The development of the warehouse is expected to secure national salt supply to maintain a stable price of the commodity, and prevent the farmers from bearing financial losses due to unstable prices.

Currently, salt price has declined from Rp3,000 per kg to Rp2,700 per kg.

"With the stock storing system, farmers would receive 30 percent of the profit," he said.

Salt production in Karawang has reached 2,000 tons per year with a total production area of 100 hectares.
