REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta government continues to promote the 2018 Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang. The games will bring together around 10 thousand athletes from 45 countries to compete in 40 sports from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

"The promotion of the implementation of the Asian Games will be intensified," Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency Head Ratiyono stated here on Thursday.

The capitals' mayors along with district and village heads are involved in spreading awareness about the 2018 Asian Games. "As a result, people are showing interest in the Asian Games," he remarked.

During the celebration of the 73rd Independence Day of Indonesia, the Jakarta administration will urge people to decorate and repaint their main gates in line with the themes of the Asian Games to echo the spirit of the games.

Meanwhile, the city's Bina Marga road agency has begun organizing sidewalks at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium area, Senayan, ahead of the Asian Games 2018.

The planning was a top priority in connection with the sporting event to be held in the next five months.

"We have started the project on the pedestrian lane in GBK, Senayan," Jakarta Bina Marga Agency Head Yusmada Faizal noted.

Faizal explained that the construction took place at Jalan Tentara Pelajar, Gelora, and Gerbang Pemuda, until Palmerah Selatan.

The total length of the lane is 4.2 kilometers and has a width of 1.5 to six meters. The project is our main goal prior to the Asian Games in August 2018, he remarked.

Some 14 sports venues renovated for the 18th Asian Games at the Bung Karno sports stadium complex in Senayan area in South Jakarta and Palembang, are ready, and seven of them were inaugurated, a minister had stated earlier.

Renovation work on the 14 sports venues was completed, with seven of them already being inaugurated, while seven others await inauguration, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono noted here, Saturday, while witnessing the inauguration of the indoor and outdoor tennis courts by President Joko Widodo.

The inauguration of the seven remaining venues depends on the schedules of President Widodo or Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla, he remarked.

"The president is keen to inaugurate them one by one. Either the president or vice president will do it," the minister revealed.

The renovation work was completed as scheduled. Hence, they are ready for the implementation of the Asian Games 2018.

President Widodo had already inaugurated the renovated indoor and outdoor tennis courts, hockey field, A/B/C football fields, archery range, swimming pool, the Bung Karno main stadiums, and Istora indoor stadium.
