60 thousand CCTV cameras to be installed across Jakarta

Sandiaga says CCTV cameras will help to make Jakarta safe.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta government will install some 60 thousand closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the capital city. CCTV cameras will also be installed in residential areas, to prevent molestation in particular. "We want to install 60 thousand CCTV cameras all over Jakarta," Deputy Governor of Jakarta Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno stated here, Wednesday.

According to Sandiaga, currently the city only have six thousand CCTV cameras. He believed the facility is important for Jakarta residents. "One of the objectives is to make Jakarta safe and not only smart," he explained.

Recently, a woman identified by her initials as DKY was molested by an unidentified man while she was on her way to a nearby kiosk. She was grabbed by the man, who covered her eyes and squeezed private part of her body's from behind.

The crime was recorded by a CCTV camera installed in her kampong located in Cipinang, East Jakarta. She reported the crime to the Police that later managed to arrest the suspect with the initial R.
