REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Friday welcomes Delegation of Special Envoy of Japanese Prime Minister Toshihiro Nikai and his entourage at the Presidential Palace of Bogor in West Java Province to celebrate 60 years of Indonesia-Japan relations. He and the Japanese delegation will hold a number of agenda including a bilateral meeting.
During his speech, Widodo stated the years of cooperation with Japan were something to boast about. "This is a year to be proud of. I welcome the arrival of His Majesty as a representative of the Japanese Government in celebrating 60 years of Indonesia-Japan relations," he said.
On the occasion, he said that he met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Manila, Philippines, in November 2017 and agreed on several matters. "We agreed to immediately complete existing infrastructure cooperation. At that time I said that we should quickly finish cooperation project that we have agreed," he said.
He has specifically asked Abe to complete the cooperation project as soon as possible.
Widodo was accompanied by a number of ministers including State Secretary Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, Minister of Public Works and People's Housing Basuki Hadimuldjono, and Special Envoy of Indonesian President for Japan Rachmat Gobel.
Currently, Indonesia and Japan have a wide range of bilateral cooperation under the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership (I-JEPA) as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The cooperation includes exchange of experts, research, and human resource development in the health sector.
Earlier, Indonesian and Japanese governments had agreed to complete three cooperation projects in Indonesia as per schedule.
Indonesian Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, and Japanese Land, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Tourism Minister, Takao Makino discussed the three projects during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Transport Ministers Meeting here on Sept 27, 2017.
The three projects are the mass rapid transport (MRT) system in Jakarta, Jakarta-Surabaya semi high-speed railway lines, and Patimban port.
