KPK to respond on pre-trial motion of chopper graft case

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) legal team will respond to the pre-trial motion filed by Irfan Kurnia Saleh, suspect of AgustaWestland (AW) 101 helicopters procurement graft case, in South Jakarta District Court, Monday.

KPK believed that corruption in the procurement of equipment in the Indonesian military (TNI) is not only detrimental to the state's finances, but also poses a great risk to the state's security.

"KPK will reiterate its authority and TNI to handle corruption case involving civilian and military personnels. This cooperation is one of important strategy to maximize corruption eradication efforts in the military, both on sanction nor deterrence," KPK spokesperson Febri Diansyah said on Monday.

The pre-trial will be held within a week considering the judge had 7 working days to read the verdict.

After being postponed for a week upon request from KPK, the inaugural session of pre-trial held on Friday (Nov. 3) to hear the petition. The hearing of KPK response is scheduled on Monday and the next day there will be examination of  witnesses, including experts witnesses, of the applicant.

On Wednesday, KPK will have the chance to present its witnesses and experts.

The conclusion will be drawn on Thursday. Meanwhile, the judge decision will be read on Friday or maximum on Monday (November 13).

KPK has named five suspects in the alleged graft case of AgustaWestland (AW) 101 helicopters procurement. Four suspects are military personnel, while one other suspect is a civilian.

The procurement of the AW 101 helicopter graft case began in last April, when TNI Air Force buy a unit of helicopter with special purchase method. According to the standard, the auction should be followed by at two companies. In this case, PT Karya Cipta Gemilang and PT Diratama Jaya Mandiri was appointed.

PT Diratama Jaya Mandiri alleged to have made a direct 514 billion rupiah worth contract with the AW 101 producer.

However, in February 2016 when being signed by TNI Air Force, the contract value was stated 738 billion rupiah..

The investigation found that the deal did not follow the proper procedures, causing a loss of Rp220 billion (US$17 million).
