REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MERAK -- The state-owned inland waterway transportation service PT ASDP for Merak office, is operating 27 roll-on, roll-off (Roro) ferries to handle the passenger influx in the run-up to the New Year celebrations.

"We are confident that we can provide the best services by operating 27 Roro ships," PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Spokesman for Merak office, Mario Sardadi Oetomo, stated here on Thursday.

He pointed out that the passenger flow over the past few weeks was relatively low and there was no congestion noted in the flow of pedestrian passengers and passengers on vehicles.

On Thursday, no passenger influx was noted at the five piers of the Merak ferry port. Vehicles intending to cross the Sunda Strait to reach the Bakauheni Port of Lampung, Sumatra, could directly board the Roro ships.

"We are confident that the 27 Roro ships will be able to overcome public transportation queues and the influx of passengers in the face of the New Year celebrations," Oetomo claimed.

He emphasized that by operating the 27 ferry ships, the ASDP will be able to serve the routes of Merak-Bakauheni Lampung with 90 trips.

Apart from this, the loading and unloading activities of the ships at the Merak port will take between 60 and 80 minutes before the ships can depart for Bakauheni.

"We will offer the best services to passengers, so that they can safely arrive at their destinations," he remarked.
