REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Council of Ulama's (MUI) Chairman KH Ma'ruf Amin backs the 55 rally. He considered the rally on Friday, May 5, as a way to convey people's aspirations. "No problem, as long as it is a peaceful rally," he said.

Kiai Ma'ruf said he understand the importance of the rally. He heard from Chairman of National Movement to Safeguard MUI's Fatwa, cleric Bachtiar Nasir, that the mission of 55 rally is to ask the judges to be independent in making the verdict on blasphemy case.

Kiai Ma'ruf explained GNPF MUI wanted the judges to have their own opinion, able to consider the case clearly and pay attention to MUI, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah's opinion.

Moreover, Kiai Ma'ruf said the judges will delegitimate credible institutions if they neglected opinion of those three organizations. "Then, whose opinion they will consider?" he said after inaugurating Islamic Book Fair at Jakarta Convention Center, Wednesday.
