Minister says competition among workers unavoidable

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Manpower Minister Hanif Dakhiri said competition among workers can’t be avoided. Especially during the era of competition nowadays.

"Now, the competition can’t be avoided. Competition among workers occur in all places from the lowest level to the international," Minister Hanif said when opening the National Workshop of LP3I in Jakarta, Monday (8/8).

It makes the government should focus on improving human resources. In the era of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), he added, workers mobility is also can’t be avoided.

"However the spirit of competition make us improve the competence which relevant to industry needs," he said.

He explained, one of the weaknesses of Indonesian workers, is the lack of proficiency in foreign language. In addition, he also called for the university to review the existing courses in order to relevant with industry needs.

"Therefore, vocational education is very important," he said He asked that universities have curriculum that is also in line with the needs of industry.

"Many scholars who are jobless or graduates who are unemployed," he said.

The number of educated unemployment, he added, because education does not teach skills and to determine the theory. For example a student majoring in animal husbandry, but the practice in the field had never touched the cattle.

"The challenge all of vocational and professional education are reviewing its relevance to the job market," he argued.
