'25 million people depending on the Citarum River '

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- As much as 25 million people are indirectly dependent on the Citarum River.

"All the people in this world depends on water, and there are 25 million people depend on the Citarum River related needs for food, irrigation, water supply and others," West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan on Environment Day in Sate Building, Bandung, West Java, Wednesday (27/7).

He said Environment Day in West Java level to coincide with the national rivers day.

"And Alhamdulilah (God Bless) there is poor condition in West Java rivers and we must save the water for life," Heryawan said.

According to him one of the serious efforts done by the West Java provincial government to rescue the Citarum River is with Citarum Bestari Program. Meanwhile linked world environment day, he said that the participation of the West Java provincial government is expected to increase the commitment and synergy of more intensive among all stakeholders to jointly maintain and preserve, carrying capacity and environmental capacity, for the achievement of the benefit and the welfare of the people of West Java. He said the theme of World Environment Day this year is "Go Wild For Life" which means save plants and wild animals for life.

This theme, he said, is very relevant to the current condition which is increasing pressure utilization of biodiversity in many areas, threatening biodiversity of Indonesia.

"Thus the increasing number of endangered flora and fauna, even some species are already extinct," he said.
