REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has lauded Taiwanese authorities' efforts to manage the daily activities of Indonesian migrant workers so that they have comfort and can lead a safe daily life.

"Based on our experience, Taiwan has been giving attention and protection to Indonesian migrant workers," the Head of Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Agency (BNP2TKI), Nusron Wahid said here on Friday.

The able protection extended to Indonesian migrant workers would increase their productivity, Nusron added.

He hoped that Indonesia-Taiwan can improve bilateral cooperation in the economic, and particularly employment sector.

The total year-on-year remittances by Indonesian migrant workers, who work in Taiwan, is set to increase by 34 percent. The agency assumed that each worker was transferring at least US$400 per month to their family in Indonesia.

BNP2TKI noted that total remittances in last December by Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan to Indonesia was pegged at US$668 million.

"The increase in remittances is very significant, compared with July 2014, when it had touched US$520 million," Nusron said.

The total number of Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan is 236,000. Among them, 60 percent work in the domestic sector, while 30 percent are employed in the formal sector and 10 percent are employed as skilled workers.

"We hope that Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan can be successful after returning to Indonesia," he said.

Nusron also attended the Taiwan National Day celebrations, along with the Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nurwahid and the Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Tantowi Yahya.
