Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand agree to receive Rohingya refugees

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to receive Rohingya refugees, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said.

"I have assigned Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi to meet with the Malaysian and Thai ministries of foreign affairs to look into the possibility of resolving the refugee crisis," he stated here on Saturday (24/5).

He added that the meeting resulted in an agreement to receive the Rohingya refugees.

"I think this is the best way to manage the refugees. The three countries would like to help them for the sake of humanity," the president remarked.

With regard to the financial issue, President Joko Widodo revealed that has asked the United Nations and a number of countries to donate to assist the refugees.

"The cost to provide care for the refugees will be covered by the United Nations and a number of countries. We are still discussing this matter," he pointed out.

Currently, Aceh province is accommodating 1,722 refugees, comprising 1,239 males, 244 females and 238 children.

They have been given shelter in four refugee camps. While 560 of them are in North Aceh district, 47 are in Aceh Tamiang, 682 in Langsa city, and 433 in East Aceh district.
