REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- The Ministry of Environment and Forestry believes that synergy among stakeholders can minimize the impacts of climate change, Head of the Climate Change Division of the ministry Tri Widyawati said here on Wednesday (6/5).

"Management of the effects of climate change should be prioritized in the national policy so we can ensure low carbon development," she added.

According to Widyawati, management of climate change should be a collaborative function of the government and administrations, and should be practiced across sectors to make all work more planned and integrated.

"Climate change can be managed by communities by implementing local programs such as the Climate Village (locally called Kampung Iklim or ProKlim), which is derived from traditional wisdom," she affirmed.

Moreover, the ministry has targeted 21 of 3,272 villages in the three of districts Manggarai, East Sumba and Sabu Raijua to participate in the ProKlim program by the end of 2016, she noted.

The three districts have different climatic conditions---Manggrai has wet climate; East Sumba is arid; and Sabu Raijua is strongly influenced by coastal conditions.

"ProKlim is a program that awards the community for its active participation in integrated climate change mitigation and adaptation," Widyawati explained, adding that it is expected to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases and improve the role of communities in climate change management.

ProKlim aims to build communities that understand climate change and its impacts and actively volunteer to manage the condition to achieve sustainable national development.

"The program is village-level and will be adjusted according to local conditions," she stated.
