REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government has no authority to intervene in each political party's internal affairs, a lawmaker said.

"The government's task is to facilitate the administration of political parties, not to intervene in their problems," Deputy Chief of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction of the House of Representatives (DPR) Abu Bakar said during a political discussion here on Saturday.

The state should not be autocratic towards the affairs of political parties, he remarked.

According to the PKS party member, the state still deserved to carry out its functions without having to get involved in issues of political parties.

He expressed regret over how fast the government intervened in the internal affairs of political parties, while it appeared to be slow to resolve the recent conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police (Polri).

Bakar was responding to the way the minister of law and human rights had unilaterally intervened in the internal conflicts of the Golkar Party and the United Development Party (PPP).

Earlier, Bambang Soesatyo, the general treasurer of the Golkar Party of the Bali congress, stated that the step taken by the law and human rights minister was illegal and a politically motivated one.

He had noted that the Red-White Coalition believed that the decision was taken without approval from President Joko Widodo.

Soesatyo reminded Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly that Indonesia was a constitutional, not authoritative, country.

As the law and human rights minister, Laoly must exercise caution, not violate laws.
