ASEAN Army Chiefs meet in Vietnam for further cooperation

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HANOI -- Army chiefs from Southeast Asian countries gathered here Wednesday for discussion focused on increasing the coordination capacity among their armies in response to non-traditional challenges.

Army leaders from the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) attended the 15th ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM-15).

Do Ba Ty, chief of the general staff of the People's Army of Vietnam, said that together with other defense and military forums, ACAMM has become an important cooperation mechanism to respond to common risks of the region, especially non-traditional security risks.

The message of the ACAMM-15 is to affirm the necessity of increasing cooperation among armies of ASEAN countries and the determination to seek for concrete initiative, measures to boost ties, he said.

At the five-day meeting, participants will discuss measures to boost cooperation among ASEAN armies in respond to common security risks, aiming to help maintain regional peace, stability and development.

The regional bloc groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
