REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- New Attorney General HM Prasetyo held a meeting of high-ranking officials of his office here on Friday, the first day after his inauguration on Thursday.
"A list of problems must be made quickly without any delay. A lot of problems have to be dealt with, especially corruption, without ignoring other cases. They all have to be handled quickly," he noted.
He gave assurance that his office will maintain good relations with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
He stated that the KPK would be given an opportunity to coordinate its supervision.
"Whatever the KPK will need, we will provide it," he affirmed.
Internally, HM Prasetyo remarked that he will implement a system of reward and punishment by rewarding those who made achievements and punishing those who violated the rules.
"(We must) work, work, and work to make improvements to restore the public's trust in the office maximally," he emphasized.
In the meantime, Kaspudin Nor, a commissioner of the Indonesia Prosecutor's Office Commission, stated that the new attorney general must be able to make the prosecutor's office the best among all law enforcement institutions in the country.
"The Indonesian prosecutor's office is the president or executive's ambassador, and so it must be made the best institution," he remarked.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the office's independence and preventing political influence in order to restore public trust.
"The new attorney general must be able to work more efficiently than his predecessors," he remarked.
HM Prasetyo, who was a former executive board member of the National Democrat Party (Nasdem), was sworn in as the new attorney general by President Joko Widodo at the state palace on Thursday.
Due to his political background, some quarters have raised doubts about him functioning independently.
General Chairman of Nasdem Surya Paloh has urged HM Prasetyo to immediately prove his mettle to address doubts from several quarters regarding his capacity and integrity.
"Hopefully, Prasetyo could soon make achievements. He must understand that not all roads are straight. This should be taken as a challenge for him to overcome and to prove his capacity," he affirmed.
He hoped that Prasetyo could use his previous experience of working as a junior attorney general to efficiently manage the office.
He said the post of attorney general is sensitive, and therefore, he has urged him to forego all other interests, so that he can focus on his job.
"Free yourself from your family's and the party's interests. I am proud to have Prasetyo in Nasdem," he added.
