Police name company owner as suspect in Kosambi explosion

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Police have named three people suspects in connection with the recent firecrackers factory fire that killed 48 people in Kosambi, Tangerang, Banten province, West Java.

"They were named suspects based on the testimonies of witnesses and investigation in the field," Jakarta Metropolitan police spokesman Senior Commissioner Argo Yuwono stated here on Saturday.

He noted that the three suspects were Indra Liyono, the owner of PT Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses firecrackers warehouse; the company's operations director, Andria Hartanto; and welder, Suparna Ega.

Yuwono added that Liyono was named suspect for causing death due to negligence and violating Article 359 of the Criminal Act and Article 74, in conjunction with Article 183 of Law Number 13, 2003, on employment.

As the owner of the company, Liyono had employed under-aged children, he remarked, adding that the police had found three under-aged children being employed in the high-risk job.

Hartanto and Ega were also named suspects for causing death by negligence.

Police sent Liyono and Hartanto to a detention center after intensive interrogation, while Ega was still unaccountable for.

The director of crime investigation, Senior Commissioner Nico Afinta, revealed that police could not confirm the involvement of Ega in the incident.

A team of doctors at the police hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta, where bodies of the victims have been kept, are still conducting identification into the incident.

The factory at the Kosambi warehouse complex was on fire before it exploded at 8.30a.m. on Thursday, killing 47 people and leaving 46 others wounded, while the total number of workers in the factory at the time of incident reached 103.
