REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, said the government had paid off its debt to the International Money Fund (IMF) in 2006. So, since that year Indonesian government is free from debt that borrowed during the monetary crisis that occurred in 1998 ago.

"Yes indeed we had debt from IMF that happened during the crisis of 1998, 25 billion US dollars. Now it is clear that we have already paid off in 2006," said Kalla at the Vice President's office, Jakarta, Wednesday (29/4).

Kalla said Bank Indonesia has explained the money given by the IMF to Indonesia was not a debt, but it was an obligation of Bank Indonesia dues as a member of the IMF. According to him, the BI contribution obligation was the Special Drawing Right (SDR) at the IMF. The obligation to pay dues to the IMF was an affair of BI with the IMF.

"BI explanation that it was in fact an obligation of contributions due since the IMF has given a special drawing a sort of backup to Indonesia so it was not the government, not well," said Kalla.
