Indonesia-Russia to tighten mutual cooperation

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON - Indonesia and Russia seek cooperation in a number of areas including transportation, mining industry, and food security, according to the Coordinating Minister of Economy, Hatta Rajasa in United Commission Meeting in Moscow, Russia.

Both countries agree to conduct several high-value projects. Among others is Russia will invest 2.5 billion USD in train network in East Kalimantan. The project hopefully can start on 2012. Yet, Russian investment on train network is also expected in like Sulawesi and Sumatra.

The members of United Commission VIII eye on the direct flight from Russia to Indonesia and vice versa, considering that the Air Service Agreement has been signed since 2010. The direct flight is expected to boost the number of tourists from Russia to Indonesia, vice versa, and also to increase the trade between both countries.

In food security, Indonesia and Russia agree to establish mutual cooperation in food procurement. Indonesia promises to buy Russian wheat and invests in noodle factory in Russia. The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry O Rogozin, said both countries could reach the target of trade volume on five billion USD in 2015.

"Indonesia and Russia are two big countries. Indonesia population is two times bigger than Russia, while Russian territory is far bigger than Indonesia. We have the potency to grow together," Rogozin said.
