REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A Muslim scholar KH Didin Hafidhuddin commented on the statement of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) suggesting the separation of religion from politics. He said it was a fatal mistake. “Separating religion and politics was a fatal mistake,” said the professor of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) when contacted by Republika.co.id on Tuesday (March 28).
Kiai Didin said that political support was needed in order to implement a good and consistent religious teachings. Of course, the political support should be good, favored honesty, justice, and pro to the people’s interest. “Separating politics and religions is the same as underrating the role of religion in life,” said him.
Kiai Didin explained by quoting the story of Abu Bakar Shiddieq as the state leader had ever fought those who separate prayer and zakat. Therefore, he said the separation of religion from politics was an underestimation to the role of religion.
What would happened when politics was not based on religion? Kiai Didin reiterated among others was the existence of bad practical politics by doing anything to achieve its goal.
