REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia will use New York Fashion Week as a step to become a mecca of Islamic fashion. Three Indonesia Muslim fashion designers, namely Dian Pelangi, Zaskia Sungkar and Barli Asmara, will take part in the event held in the next February 14.

The Head of Media, Design, Science and Technology of Creative Economy, Harry Waluyo, said the event was a big opportunity for Indonesia to seek wider market. "We support them with program and global penetration such as in Japan, Germany, Netherlands, and Italy," Waluyo said recently.

Former Vice Minister of Tourism Sapta Nirwandar is optimistic that Indonesia will soon become a mecca of Islamic fashion. "Look at one of our designers, Dian Pelangi. Her brand is one of the most popular Muslim wears in the world," she said.

Based on the data, Nirwandar said that Dian Pelangi was the most popular Islamic fashion from 156 brands in the world. Designer Dian Pelangi said that Indonesia had potential to become the center of Islamic fashion at least by 2020.
