US withdraws an economic sanction in Sudan after 20 years

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Jakarta said the United States has revoked the entire economic and trade sanctions on Sudan. The economic sanctions have been imposed for 20 years. 

In a press release made by the Embassy of Sudan on Wednesday (January 18) in Jakarta, before his administration ended, President Barack Obama issued an "Executive Order" on Friday (January 20). It claimed that the US government recognizes the positive steps the Sudanese government and repeal related sanctions to Sudan.  "The positive steps include a wide range of fields, such as, the human rights situation, which experienced a very impressive positive developments and cooperation with the US in fighting terrorism," said the embassy on the press release made available to Republika.co.id

In the last six months, the Sudanese government also showed positive steps, including the reduction of offensive military activity, the cessation of hostilities in the areas of conflict and the steps to improve humanitarian access and cooperation.  It is seen as an effort to overcome regional disputes in the Republic of South Sudan. 

The lifting of sanctions will be effective on Tuesday and will be reviewed in the next six months. By the lifted ban, Sudan can trade extensively with the US and other countries and open up opportunities for investment from countries around the world. It can also be free to deal with the entire bank. 

The Sudanese of Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Ghandour, welcomed the US decision. He stated that it was a step forward to remove the country from America's list of the supplier or supporters of terrorism. He promised to continue the cooperation with the US government in all fields of common interest. 

The US decision is the result of intensive and complex dialogue between the two countries in the past six months. According to him, the positive political developments in Sudan in various fields underlie the lifting of sanctions. He also thanked to the National Dialogue initiated by President Omer Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir. All parties have already agreed to a document for peace and stability in the country and a new constitution that will soon be declared. 

A transitional government will take power and organize free elections within the next few years. "The Embassy of Sudan expects the lifting of sanctions that paved the way for cooperation with the government of Indonesia, Singapore and Australia as well as the commercial community in the country."
