REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) reminded all local government (local government) to prepare for El Ninopeak that will be occurred from September to October 2015.
CIFOR scientist, Hery Purnomo, said that a number of areas that are prone to forest fires, such as Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, and Borneo should avoid burning the land.
"Government should be 'zero tolerance' against those who use fire for land preparation," said Hery, in Bogor, recently.
Hery explained that El Nino has impact on drought due to increased temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino then attracts moisture from Indonesia, so that the water in the form of rain fell in the Pacific and Latin America.
"September to October is the peak," he added.
Hery gives four steps that need to be done by the governments to face El Nino. First, set up an integrated team due to fire prevention. Second, cooperate with TNI as a short-term solution to extinguish the fire.
Third, boycotted the owners of oil palm that produce oil from the burning land. Fourth, totally ban the use of fire for agricultural land because the slightest use of fire for land preparation would be fatal if it is done at the peak of El Nino.
Some areas in Indonesia has always been a world spotlight because of the problem of forest fires that occurred repeatedly each year. The smoke of forest fires in Riau usually impacts to Singapore and Malaysia.
