REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA The Ministry of Agama (Kemenag) held an initial isbat session (determination) of Syawal 1446 Hijriyah in HM Rashidi Auditorium at the Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Jakarta on Saturday (29/3/2025). In the press conference of the results of the isbat session, Minister of Religious Affairs (Menag) Prof. KH Nasaruddin Umar announced and decreed that 1 Syawal 1446 H or Eid ul Fitr falls on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Menag Nasaruddin said that today's crescent position across Indonesia is still below the horizon with altitudes ranging from minus 3 degrees 15 minutes 47 seconds to minus 1 degree 4 minutes 37 seconds. Angle of elongation 1 degree 12 minutes 89 seconds, up to 1 degree 36 minutes 38 seconds. Thus, according to the present day crescent data do not meet the MABIMS crescent criteria.

“Based on the assessment of the crescent position of the Indonesian region that does not meet the MABIMS criteria and the absence of visible crescent reports, it is agreed that the 1st Syawal of 1446 Hijri falls on Monday, March 31, 2025,” Menag Nasaruddin said at HM Rashidi Auditorium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, Saturday (29/3/2025).

Previously, the isbat session was held and attended by representatives of the Islamic ormas, representatives of ambassadors of the Sahabbat countries, as well as the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The session of Isbat began with the Isbat Syawal Seminar which raised the theme “Between Tradition, Science, and Regulation.”

In the seminar, several speakers were present, namely KH Julian Lukman representative from PP Al Washliyah, KH Zufar Bawazir representative from Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah, H Sriyatin Shodiq representative from Muhammadiyah, and H Cecep Norwendaya from Hisab Rukyat Team of Ministry of Foreign Affairs RI.

In the seminar, Cecep as a member of the Hisab Rukyat Team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, astronomically, the position of the crescent moon in Indonesia at the time of Maghrib on March 29, 2025, is still below the horizon and the new MABIMS criteria set in 2021, making it impossible to observe.

“Throughout Indonesia, the position of the crescent on 29 Ramadan 1446 AH (March 29, 2025) is below the horizon, based on the available data, it can be concluded that in the NKRI region, the early crescent of Syawal is impossible to observe,” Cecep said.

The new criteria of the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS) stipulate that astronomically, the crescent moon can be observed if the moon has a height of at least 3 degrees and an elongation of at least 6.4 degrees.

Meanwhile, according to Cecep, at Maghrib time of March 29, 2025, the moon's position in Indonesia was minus 3 degrees 15 minutes 28 seconds to minus 1 degree 4 minutes 34 seconds, with an elongation angle between minus 1 degree 36 minutes 23 seconds to 1 degree 12 minutes 53 seconds.

Thus, Cecep said, if the data is linked to the potential of the crescent moon, astronomically or hisab, it is possible that the beginning of the month of Shawal falls on Monday, March 31, 2025.
