REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Empowerment (Menko PMK) Pratikno said the government is preparing to immediately add weather modification operations (OMC). The operation aims to reduce rainfall in the Jabodetabek area (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi).
“We're also adding to weather modification operations. Since it is flooded, this problem also exists in the shipments from upstream, also in the downstream itself it also rains constantly, yes, in the area of the Jabodetabek region, so this should be reduced rainfall. Precipitation is reduced,” Pratikno said on Tuesday (4/3/2025).
Pratikno said the OMC would later be carried out by the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) and the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). In particular, Pratikno mentioned that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government can also add further to carry out modifications in its region. The reason is that Jakarta is among the areas affected by flooding quite seriously due to the intensity of heavy rains in recent times.
According to Pratikno, the OMC will be carried out until the second week of March 2025. Based on BMKG forecasts heavy rainfall will continue to occur until this period.
“So it is until the beginning of the second week the situation is still raining and it is expected to be heavy. Therefore, we will try to lower (the intensity of the rain), reduce it,” Pratikno said.
In addition to taking steps to increase OMC, the government also focuses on rescuing affected communities by providing food and health services. Not only evacuating people, the government is also focusing on repairing public facilities such as houses of worship and streets considering both facilities are very important in Ramadan 2025.
“Indeed, what we are dealing with at the moment is rapid handling for the rescue of people. Therefore, the evacuation was deployed earlier, we have coordinated for that evacuation, which locations need what help, we have coordinated,” Pratikno said.
