REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is conducting a study related to artificial intelligence technology (AI) to be able to be implemented into the technical, research, and development aspects of nuclear reactors.

Head of the Research Center for Nuclear Reactor Technology (PRTRN) BRIN Typhoon Setiadipura through a statement in Jakarta, Friday (21/2/2025) said that now is the right time to study AI technology so that it can be implemented into nuclear reactors.

Therefore, BRIN collaborates with a number of research and industry organizations from abroad, such as the United States, Japan, China, and Korea, in an effort to study artificial intelligence.

“Working together with Kunihiko Nabeshima of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) or other researchers from China engaged in AI will be of great benefit to PRTRN BRIN, especially in technical, research and development aspects,” Topan Setiadiputra said.

In this regard, JAEA representative Kunihiko Nabeshima explained that artificial intelligence technology has an important role to play in supporting the nuclear sector. “AI can help in emergency response to nuclear access,” Nabeshima said.

Nabeshima exposed the artificial intelligence technology applied to nuclear reactors at this point in time being able to supervise reactors and provide information to operators.

“Furthermore, AI can provide recommendations on actions to be taken by operators in order to maintain the safety of reactors,” he said.

Therefore, Nabeshima hopes that the cooperation between JAEA and BRIN on the development of artificial intelligence technology for nuclear reactors can go well.
