REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PT Pertamina Patra Niaga (VAT) further strengthens its role in supporting the green energy transition through the supply of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) or Pertamina Renewable Diesel. In this regard, VAT collaborated with PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale). In this cooperation, VAT encourages the use of environmentally friendly fuels in the mining sector.

The move, as a follow-up to last September's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), places PT Vale as a pioneer in adopting HVO in heavy equipment operations in the mining sector. Director of Marketing Central and Trade of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Maya Kusmaya, stated this collaboration as a real step towards industrial sustainability in Indonesia. Using HVO, Pertamina Renewable Diesel is not only a sustainable fuel solution, but also supports operational efficiency in the mining industry.

“This is in line with the government's goals and our commitment to achieve energy self-sufficiency, where HVO products alone have a TKDN value of more than 99 percent. We hope this collaboration will inspire other sectors to switch to clean energy for a greener future,” Maya said, in Pertamina's official statement on Saturday (9/11/2024).

Director & Chief Operation and Infrastructure Officer of PT Vale, Abu Ashar, confirmed the initiative is in line with the company's grand strategy of decarbonization and carbon footprint reduction. “The use of HVO is a strategic step in achieving our decarbonisation targets. In addition to supporting operational efficiency, these fuels help to significantly reduce environmental impacts. We are proud to be a pioneer in this innovation in the Indonesian mining sector,” Abu said.

In the trial, two mining truck units, Komatsu and Caterpillar used HVO with the result of reducing carbon emissions by up to 70 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional diesel. Director of Product Support PT United Tractors Tbk, Idot Supriadi said that HVO is able to maintain engine performance while supporting operational sustainability.

“We see that HVO is able to maintain the performance of mine truck engines while providing cleaner emissions, this is of course very beneficial for the sustainability of our machinery operations in the mining industry and this is also part of our commitment to the use of environmentally friendly fuels,” Idot said.

Product Support Manager of PT Trakindo Utama, Semuel Tikupang also conveyed the importance of renewable fuels such as HVO to maintain environmental quality. His side is proud to participate in this trial. They saw for themselves how HVO from VAT was able to improve fuel efficiency and maintain the performance of Caterpillar truck engines.

“Even from our test results, the product is 100 percent compatible, meaning there is no need to add spare parts or other modifications. This is a significant step to support a more environmentally friendly industry,” Semuel said.

Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to be committed to providing clean energy solutions that can be applied in various sectors. With this kind of collaboration it is hoped to drive a broader green transformation in Indonesia.

“This collaboration is a real proof of how Pertamina Patra Niaga, together with strategic partners such as PT Vale, United Tractors, and Trakindo, can bring about positive changes in the energy transition. We hope this cooperation can inspire other industries to work together to support a more sustainable future,” Maya said.

On another occasion, Vice President Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso said Pertamina will continue to expand cooperation in order to optimize the utilization of green energy.

“Pertamina Renewable Diesel is proof of Pertamina's commitment to green energy to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060,” Fadjar said.

Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emissions 2060 target by continuing to promote programs that directly impact the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The entire effort is aligned with the application of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) across the company's lines of business and operations.
