REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- Vice President (Vice President) Ma'ruf Amin said the boarding school (pesantren) was reinstated because of a case that was so far removed from the characteristics of a real boarding school. He insists boarding schools are a place to educate, not a hotbed of violence.

“We certainly keep a close eye on the boarding school, in fact, the boarding school that exists like this is the case, not a feature of a boarding school,” said Vice President Ma'ruf Amin gave a press statement after attending the laying of the first stone of the construction of a mosque and boarding house in Rawagede, Sukamakmur District, Bogor Regency, West Java, Sunday (13/10/2024).

He said boarding schools are a place to make a person of noble character. If there is violence in the boarding school, he said, then it is not part of the santri that wants to advance the boarding school.

“When there's that case, it's an aberration. This means not a boarding school person, building a boarding school, not santri him. If Santri doesn't have that kind of character, so it's smuggling. Smuggling, smuggling, non-residents using boarding schools cause problems,” said Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

Therefore, the Vice President requested that later there be a kind of Kiai Council in charge of supervising the boarding school so that violence does not occur.

“Well, we ask that later, there will be some kind of Kiai Council to watch over him, lest things like that happen,” the Prime Minister said.

Furthermore, the Vice President said that the existence of boarding schools to date is still important in order to create people who understand religion.

“Why is the cottage necessary? Because the boarding school is a place to train people who understand religion, the language we are used to prepare people who understand religion. Because of what? Because a person who understands religion is the one who continues the struggle, because these scholars do not all live forever, he will die one by one, there must be a successor,” the Vice President said.

Earlier, the Child Friendly Pesantren Pondok Network (JPPRA) mentioned that boarding schools should be at the forefront in creating the next generation or Human Resources (HR) of noble character without using violent methods.

JPPRA National Coordinator Kiai Yoyon Syukron Amin said this was a form of determination by his side in tackling the violence that exists in the boarding school world, such as the recent one in West Aceh.

“We are deeply concerned about this incident and strongly condemn any form of violence in the boarding school environment. Boarding schools should be a safe and comfortable place for children to study, not a place where they become victims of violence,” Kiai Yoyon said in an official statement on Friday (4/10/2024).

So, according to him, there should be a further evaluation of the existing education system in the boarding school so that similar events do not recur in the future and eliminate the bad image of the boarding school.

Recently, it has also gone viral at a boarding school that allegedly became a place where pony caretakers carried out acts of abuse on their students. These irregularities allegedly took place over the years to cause profound trauma to the victims.
