REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) met OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann at Bogor Presidential Palace on Tuesday (28/5/2024). The two discussed, one of which was Indonesia's commitment to become a full member of the organization within three years.
“Indonesia is committed to becoming an OECD member within three years. Earlier, Mr. President said that we will form a team for this and will push for this OECD accession integrated with Indonesia's medium-term development,” Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said in a press statement via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube account, which was witnessed in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/5/2024).
Airlangga said, the President has formed a team to accelerate Indonesia's accession as a permanent member state of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
This is in accordance with Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 17 of 2024 on the National Team for Preparing and Accelerating Indonesia's Membership in the OECD or the OECD National Team chaired by Airlangga Hartarto, accompanied by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.
Indonesia's accession process to become a permanent member of the OECD, Airlangga said, will also be integrated with medium-term development.
Airlangga also compared Indonesia's achievements with other countries that are already permanent members of the OECD, namely Costa Rica with a state budget deficit of 5 percent. Meanwhile, Indonesia's state budget deficit is much lower, at below 3 percent.
In addition, Indonesia has officially become a full member of the 40th Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an international organization focused on global efforts to eradicate money laundering, terrorism financing, and funding the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
As for the meeting between President Jokowi and General Secretary Mathias Cormann, this is the second time. The first meeting was held in August 2023 to discuss the latest information regarding the accession process and the steps that the Indonesian government needs to take in order to become a permanent member of the OECD.
Indonesia itself has been on the OECD accession list and since 2007, Indonesia has been an OECD partner alongside Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
Secretary General Mathias Cormann is also scheduled to meet with Defence Minister as well as RI President-elect Prabowo Subianto, Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament Puan Maharani, DPR RI leadership, OECD Accession National Team, Kadin and Apindo.
“It will also open a technical workshop on the OECD accession procession of ministries and agencies,” Airlangga said.
